Day to day activities of this Trekking Program
- Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Elevation: 6,398 ft to 8,530 ft | Hiking Time: 4-6 hours | Distance: 8 km | 5 miles | Habitat: Rain Forest
After a drive to the Rongai Gate near the Kenya border, begin trekking through pine forests and lush rainforests. The trail offers opportunities to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys. Arrive at Simba Camp, which is situated on the edge of the moorland zone.
- Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave
Elevation: 8,530 ft to 11,320 ft | Hiking Time: 6-8 hours | Distance: 12 km | 7 miles | Habitat: Moorland
Continue trekking through open moorlands, gaining elevation steadily. The trail offers breathtaking views of Kibo Peak and the Kenyan plains. Camp at Second Cave, where the terrain begins to transition into a more barren, alpine environment.
- Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelelwa Camp
Elevation: 11,320 ft to 11,811 ft | Hiking Time: 5-6 hours | Distance: 9 km | 5.5 miles | Habitat: Moorland
Ascend steadily as you approach the steeper slopes of the mountain. Pass through unique vegetation, including giant groundsels and lobelias, before arriving at Kikelelwa Camp. Enjoy stunning views of the rugged Mawenzi Peak.
- Day 4: Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Elevation: 11,811 ft to 14,160 ft | Hiking Time: 4-5 hours | Distance: 6 km | 4 miles | Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trail steepens as you ascend to Mawenzi Tarn, located beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak. This campsite is one of the most picturesque on the mountain, offering ample time for acclimatization and exploration around the tarn.
- Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 14,160 ft to 15,430 ft | Hiking Time: 5-7 hours | Distance: 8 km | 5 miles | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Cross the lunar-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, entering a barren alpine desert. Arrive at Kibo Hut, where you will rest and prepare for the midnight summit push. Early dinner and hydration are key for summit success.
- Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft | Hiking Time: 6-8 hours | Distance: 6 km | 4 miles | Habitat: Arctic
Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 19,341 ft to 12,205 ft | Hiking Time: 5-7 hours | Distance: 16 km | 10 miles | Habitat: Moorland
Begin the midnight climb to Gilman’s Point (18,652 ft) and then to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing to Horombo Hut for overnight. This is a long, demanding day.
- Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Elevation: 12,205 ft to 6,046 ft | Hiking Time: 5-6 hours | Distance: 20 km | 12.5 miles | Habitat: Rain Forest
Complete the descent through lush rainforests, where you can reflect on your accomplishment. At Marangu Gate, collect your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi for a celebratory meal and well-earned rest.
