- Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
Elevation: 5,249 ft to 9,514 ft | Hiking Time: 5-7 hours | Distance: 11 km | 7 miles | Habitat: Rain Forest
Begin your trek from the Umbwe Gate, entering a steep and narrow forest trail surrounded by lush vegetation. The path involves a challenging ascent through the rainforest, with views of giant trees and moss-covered terrain. Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp for your first night on the mountain.
- Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 9,514 ft to 13,044 ft | Hiking Time: 4-6 hours | Distance: 6 km | 4 miles | Habitat: Heath and Moorland
Leave the rainforest behind as the trail ascends sharply. Pass through heath and moorland zones with stunning views of the western breach and towering cliffs. Arrive at Barranco Camp, set in a picturesque valley beneath the Great Barranco Wall.
- Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft | Hiking Time: 4-5 hours | Distance: 5 km | 3 miles | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Start the day by scaling the Great Barranco Wall, a non-technical but steep and exhilarating climb. Traverse rolling hills and valleys, passing through an arid alpine desert landscape. Arrive at Karanga Camp for a well-deserved rest and acclimatization.
- Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft | Hiking Time: 4-5 hours | Distance: 4 km | 2 miles | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Continue trekking through the desolate, windswept alpine desert along the Southern Circuit. Arrive at Barafu Camp in the early afternoon, where you will prepare for the summit attempt. Rest, hydrate, and have an early dinner before heading to bed early for the midnight summit push.
- Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft | Hiking Time: 6-8 hours | Distance: 5 km | 3 miles | Habitat: Arctic
Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 19,341 ft to 10,065 ft | Hiking Time: 4-6 hours | Distance: 12 km | 7 miles | Habitat: Rain Forest
Begin the midnight ascent to the summit via Stella Point (18,652 ft). Experience the breathtaking sunrise at the roof of Africa, Uhuru Peak. After celebrating, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
- Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,423 ft | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours | Distance: 10 km | 6 miles | Habitat: Rain Forest
Complete your descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll collect your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for a refreshing shower and celebratory meal to mark your achievement.
